ABOUT

Becky Hoghton is a UK-based artist. Her work addresses themes of transformation, magical thinking and the power of belief. From a cherished pebble kept in a pocket to the worship of a millennia-old sun cult, she is fascinated by the human instinct towards symbolic acts and charged objects. This interest is rooted in her own lived experience, and the sometimes absurd, always hopeful pursuit of change.

With curiosity and a lightness of touch, she merges traditional folk practices with contemporary narratives. She imagines systems, invents quests, leads group explorations and makes objects. Together they play with the moment an ordinary thing crosses the threshold into becoming magical. Through these experiments she gathers signs and symbols, translating them into metaphors and visual languages.

Her ceramic and textile sculptures are enchanted objects that belong to unknown magical cosmologies. They occupy an uncertain territory between artifact, tool and instruction. Simultaneously ancient and futuristic, they invite viewers to suspend disbelief and consider the possibility of agency within the objects themselves.  They are forged through a multi-layered process in which ritual and suggestion are treated as materials, further imbuing the sculptures with myth and meaning.

Becky’s work explores the moment when transformation, real or imagined, comes into being. Ultimately, she uses humour and fiction to create encounters with the ambiguous, the mystical, the irrational and the odd.
