ABOUT

Becky Hoghton’s artistic practice journeys into the complicated human condition, the power of belief, and the functions of magic and awe in a bewildering world. Formed through mythmaking and ritual, her work exists as enchanted objects and transformative encounters.

Merging traditional folk practice with 21st century narratives she imagines alternative methods of self-preservation and means of coping, with a special interest in health and disability. From a cherished pebble kept in a pocket to the worship of a millennia-old sun cult, she is fascinated by our instinctive use of objects and ceremony. The result is a playful exploration of the magical acts we employ to give a sense of control - and the value of awe and wonder to enrich and fortify.

Following 20 years working as a creative producer in the public realm, she is currently undertaking an Masters in Fine Art at Central St Martins, London.
